Using Accutrackling like system for safety

I am doing research on using cell phones with gps capability to increase student safety on my campus. Basically, the student, when in danger, press and hold a "panic" button on their cell phone that will alert the local police that they are in danger. The police then, already knowing the person's location is able to arrive on the scene faster.

My question is, what is the price for such a system like accutracking.com and where can I obtain figures? What are the components, etc.

And lastly, what do you guys think of this?

I'm sure AT will get back to you on costs and stuff, however.

Theres one primary obsticle to using it as you want.

Logistically, for such a deployment, every single student on the system would have to have a nextel iden phone with the proper data plan.

Little other things like, they need to have the phone running, the program has to have a "panic button" feature added in, stuff like that also gets in the way.

But none of that matters because of the single problem i posted.

If they are already carrying a NEXTEL phone all they have to do is to call 911.
The location will be sent directly to police. That was the whole impetus behind enhanced E-911.

I've been trying to find a way to tie in a momentary contact to the refresh button and if refresh is pressed it indicates an emergency situation. However, I've yet to figure out how to tell the phone to email the last coordinates under this condition.

With the phone in the trunk the odds of refresh being pressed is almost zero so any manual refresh verus the timed update of coordinates, etc. would be the real thing. Was going to install a momentary switch somewhere around the center console which is reachable from all locations in the vehicle.

Would appreciate any suggestions on the best way to achieve this safety feature. I've pressed the refresh but on the website I see no indication it came from the 'refresh' or was an auto update. I could use the difference in time between the timestamps though that would be quering the timestamps for the spread on a continuous basis which would eat bandwidth.

BTW: I can make the connections for the momentary switch its the software side that is beyond me. Also if anyone has the pin configuration for the power/USB connector on the phone I would like to see what each pins function is.

BTWII: If you put your phone in the trunk and your trunk has a trunk light its easy to tap 12 volts from it since it is hot all the time just before the switch. This will also work for some glove boxes that have the light.

I'm no phone wizard but in my area if you have a gps phone and call 911 the police will know where you are as soon as you make the call... So really you don't have to talk cause they will be able to hear you... Its not like a robber is going to let you call them before he robs you any way... So seems to me that the best way to fix that is to put 911 in your speed dial... That way you only push 1 button and the rest is history... Another thing to think about is response time a lot can happen in a few minutes ... I hope this helped....
