Accutracking data plan?

This question may seem basic, but humor me anyway. Does the Accutracking client on the phone use the internet access as provided by the carrier to the phone to connect to Accutracking's server?

To clarify, is the phone using the internet directly to update Accutracking's servers, or does it go through a different data channel?
