Questions from a Potential Client

Post by IanM »

Hello, I am considering purchasing and deploying your GPS tracking solutions throughout a fleet of 95 vehicles which covers multiple departments in the company I work for. We do contract based work in the cable/telecom industry.

The current PDA we use is the Sprint Mogul PPC-6800 (also called HTC Titan 100) which runs Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Within this operating system are there any currently known issues regarding functionality? Also, about how much battery life can I expect your tracking software to use up? These PDA's are used very frequently throughout a 10-14 hour work day and already run web data intensive applications.

Also, among many other mapping/routing applications, we make use Microsoft MapPoint 2009 AND 2010 on a daily basis, does your COMM add-in work just as well in both versions or is there a limitation to using 2009? Does it even work in the 2010 version?

Is there any additional configuration required on my part to show an entire days worth of tracking points inside of MapPoint (or even Google Earth) or does the default of 100 still apply for performance reasons?

Any and all information is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

Thanks for the questions. PPC6800 is compatible. GPS doesn't work indoors so make sure the phone has a relatively good sky view. Otherwise, you may see sporadical tracking during the day. The battery usually lasts about 8 hours with tracking running, which might be an issue for you.

The Mappoint add-in is tested working with MapPoint 2009. We'll test on 2010 but theoretically it should work as well.

Once the Mappoint is started the tracking data is coming in and kept on the map, until you close or restart MapPoint. It's not limited by 100 points (but there's a hard limit which is thousands). Google Earth works the same. I'll get back to you with the exact hard limit on number of locations.

Thanks for the information. I know that for most cases the hard limits would be more than enough however I would like to know what exactly they are given the amount of vehicles we will be tracking and the large quantity of locations they will each be visiting each day.

Thanks again.

Updated info: there's no limit for Mappoint. The Google Earth has a limit of 100 points.
