i use serial on my desktop. it may be slower, but its alot less buggy.

and when you're doing 20 units at once for a public safety customer, less buggy is good.

Success!

OK, I got it working!
a few of the problems were:

1. I was first using a Windows XP Legacy-Free Laptop, so had to use a Serial-to-USB adapter. I guess it didn't like that, although the correct COM ports still showed up in WebJAL (COM 6 & 7).

2. On the second machine (Desktop Windows 2000) I had Palm HotSync Manager running at startup on the only COM port (1) on the computer. I would shut it down and then fire up WebJAL and it wouldn't connect.

3. Once I took Palm HotSync out of the startup group, I rebooted tried again and it worked.

So, I guess the lessons are: Don't run another COM-dependant application at startup, don't use a Serial-to-USB adapter, and try to use USB Data cable from the get-go.

Thanks for your replies, madrabbitt

Well, this is the second phone I've tried, but I can try another. The phone I have right now is the only one with the appropriate Data plan for AccuTracking, but I can at least try another to attempt to connect to WebJAL.
Just to confirm, I'm using WebJAL version R01.01.03
with a host setting;
66.197.153.197 idenupdate.motorola.com
and Registry setting;
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motorola\WebJAL]
"SITE_URL"="https://idenupdate.motorola.com/webjal010102/index.cgi"

Now, after posting this, I see that the registry entry refers to version 01.01.02. I doubt that makes a difference, but... should I be using the older WebJAL?

do you have a second phone to test it with?

i dont think there should be a problem using a telus phone rather then nextel

No, there is no JAVA application running on the phone.
I've tried this on another PC as well, and still can't connect to the phone after logging into WebJAL.

is there any java program running on the phone at all when you're trying to connect?

Can anyone tell me if the "vinnycuz" package that's been talked about on this and other forums works with the Telus Motorola i58sr phone with the Serial data connection?

I have done everything on the install instructions, and when I try to "connect to phone" in WebJAL R01.01.03 I get an error, "The application was unable to read the required phone information. Please check your cable connection and preferences...."
I can connect using iDEN Phonebook manager just fine.
The iDEN DownloadAppsUtility, or SoftwareUpgradeUtility also don't connect.

I have the proper Data Plan, Apache works, I can use the built-in GPS utility (My Location) and it locates satellites just fine, but I can't get this application loaded! :?
I've tried different Baud rates and that doesn't appear to help... I'm lost and need help.
Thanks in advance
