i415 setup

I got a great deal on an i415 at my local retailer.
So I purchased it with the hopes my existing MOT accesories would work, ie. USB cable chargers etc, but they didn't
So I am now looking for a USB adapter to load the SW onto the phone....
In the meantime, should the "GPS" function be updating and displaying the position info? I can't seem to get a bearing with it.
I found the How to guide so I'll be trying that as soon as I find a USB cable.
