email address format limitation question

I noticed that the email address field for alerts is limited to an address in the format of:
name@part1.part2 I happen to have an email address with two periods in the format:
name@part1.part2.part3 and the system tells me that it is an invalid email address.
Is there a way around this or could the email field be updated to allow addresses of this type?
Thanks,
Rearden

We do support
name@part1.part2.part3 format. There might be something else failed validation. Can you please PM me your username and the email address that failed?

I am either unable to PM or probably PEBKAC, so here is a followup.
On further checking, you are right, some three part email addresses work, but not all.
specifically single letter parts do not work, e.g.:
m.com
m.facebook.com
Error: Cannot update fence. Invalid alert email/SMS: "
test@m.hush.com"
On a different issue:
when I attempt to update my account under Account Settings and make a minor change like "Alert Preference" or "Default page after login", I receive an error message:
Cannot change name to '(my username here)'. User name already exists.
I want to keep my current username, but I want to modify some of the information under that username.
Thanks!

Any update on this?
rearden
works:
test@test.com
test@s1.test.com
does not work, but needs to work:
test@s.test.com
Error: Cannot update fence. Invalid alert email/SMS: "
test@s.test.com" (Use comma to separate. No space allowed).
