i730 GPS

Post by Skibum »

Well

I tried to start my GPS this morning, and NADA. Worked yesterday, not today. I did a reboot, a master reset, and still nothing. Even the built-in application freezes the phone for about 3 minutes, then reboots it.

I am not too happy.... :(

Interesting development.....

It seems that I am not alone. Just what has happened to GPS?

I can confirm this is a widely observed problem. Many i730 users have reported the phone reboots when using any GPS apps, including the phone's built-in GPS app.

Nextel & Motorola haven't responded yet. We are watching.

Just think of the mess that tomorrow will bring.

The important thing for users is that this is a phone issue, and not an Accutracking issue.

Called Motorola, and NEXTEL... neither one claimed to know anything about the issue....

More and more users are reporting the issue now. A flaw in the i730/i830 firmware? Both Motorola and Nextel are investigating now.

Well I filed a case report with Motorola at 8:00 am that was escalated right away. No return call yet. I warned them that it might get a bit "busy" today.... :)

07/18/2004 (yesterday) was the "Y2K" day for GPS (08/22/1999 was too). iDEN phone's GPS firmware is not fully-prepared for this change and caused these mess.

It appears that our phones cannot handle a week of 0. So if everything goes according to theory, GPS should start functioning again next week.

Nextel released this statement this evening:

http://www.nextel.com/gps_updates.shtml?id8=gpsupdates
Nextel, Motorola Joint Statement Regarding A-GPS Services

Nextel and Motorola are aware of a software issue affecting assisted global positioning satellite location (A-GPS) services for the Motorola i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 and i830 iDEN? phones. Engineers from Motorola and Nextel are working to determine the root cause and design a permanent fix to remedy the situation.

For customers using the Motorola i58 and i88 iDEN phones, the A-GPS commercial location services capabilities are fully functional. A-GPS utilizes a combination of satellite, network and software technology to identify the approximate latitude and longitude of the wireless phone. Nextel’s customers use A-GPS for such purposes as locating fleets of vehicles as they travel or downloading real-time weather updates. Additionally, Nextel’s Motorola iDEN phones continue to be fully operational with regard to other services — cellular phone calls, Push To Talk™ calls, wireless data such as text messaging and SMS, voice mail, Caller ID, etc.

Nextel’s 911 service continues to be available throughout the country, transmitting the caller’s callback number and nearest cell site to those Public Safety Answering Points – or 911 call centers. Nextel has temporarily disabled the transmission of the A-GPS enabled location information for E911 Phase II location services until a permanent solution to the software issue is available.

Nextel will continue selling its current line of Motorola iDEN phones and will update any functionality as required to address this issue.

Please check back to this site for future updates.

Trouble with GPS

Post by Nanto »

I live in Cordoba, Argentina, and had the same trouble since Jul. 18th, the GPS produce the restarting of the i730 after 3 or 4 minutes trying to get satellital connection.

Trying with an i530, I had de same problem. We have lost the GPS service from Motorola?

Hi Nanto

Until there is a software update issued from NEXTEL and Motorola, it looks like we are without GPS.

It looks like Motorola has released a beta version of the software update to deal with this issue. Early reports are positive!
