Post subject: Covert Tracking of Employees with Employer Owned Phones
Post Posted: Wed Oct 10, 2007 8:44 pm
Am I to understand that I CANNOT covertly track my employees using Company owned Nextel non-Blackberry phones?

If that's the case, what's the point of this software? WHY is this the case? If I can covertly track a Blackberry, WHY NOT the i560?

We suspect we have people stealling lots of overtime, but we need proof.

All of this talk about hiding phones in cars is crazy. There are lots of gizmos on the market that will accomplish the same thing, and that may be where I end up, since the vehicles the employees use are company owned as well.

It would just be easier using Nextel phones.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Part of the reason is because the Java application does not allow it to be "hidden" and not found...

The point of this software is there are more people in this world than you and some of them happen to like the way this software works for them.
Hiding phones in cars may be crazy to you but works for many others.
I suggest you get one of the other "gizmos" that are on the market and leave your selfish comments to yourself.

So the reason it will not track covertly on non Blackberry Nextel phones is because of the way in which Nextel handles its Java Apps?

Correct; the Nextel phones/software do not allow for the hidden java applications to be run in the background. You can hide them to a certain point - but they are always in the suspended apps and other places which are EASILY found - even by those who do not use their phone much...

Tracking peoples personal/work phones w/o their knowledge is tough; tracking company vehicles, thats a different story...

This is exactly why my company has a specific established policy reguarding gps tracking on company issued phones.

Basically, The employees KNOW the program is there, what its used for, and its a violation of company policy to defeat it.

So, if they expect to get paid, especially overtime, and extended sites, then their phone's tracker better be on and working.

Of course, now that we dont have nextel as our primary carrier, we're down to two tracked phones, and they're both installed in company vehicles... it doesnt matter to us as much how accurate they are. We know where the trucks are, and its more for security and anti-theft then auditing purposes.

If anyone wants to see our company policy, and model their own after it, let me know.
