Seriously, when the application starts, she will see it, and the phone can at times seem more sluggish.

Did you try taking your phone outside and looking at the display?
How many satellites does it pick up? If none, try turning the phone off and then on again, and then restart the application.

Mine has been on for months. I find that every so often I do need to restart the phone. (I usually do not turn the phone off)

If you just purchased today, that might be the issue. Data can take 2 or 3 days to get fully activated.
