"No fix" message on the phone means the phone needs a better view of the sky for more satellite to get a GPS fix. Just hold the phone for a few minutes in the open area with a good view of the sky till the phone screen reads "Sent TIMESTAMP". Usually the first fix is the toughest to get and take longer time than the following fix.
The starter kit we sold never had a single return for functionality. The only one we got is a dead battery. We have a one year free replacement warranty for the starter kit for $40:
