The best place is under the dash..without a doubt!

Under the hood works fine, and temp is usually not an issue.

I would place it inside of a protective case - such as a Pelican, to assist with moisture.

can you place this under the hood and still receive good signal. Would the conditions make it to hot in the summer or to cold in the winter to function properly?
