we talking open water or lake?

if its a lake, then assuming the surrounding area has coverage, you should be good on the water.

I also thought about this at one point, but how good is cell phone coverage in the waters, I know GPS won't be a problem, but cell coverage might be.

Has anyone used the Start Up Kit in a boat? I was thinking of hiding the phone in the console of a boat. Is the GPS signal strong enough to go thru fiberglass? What happens if someone finds the phone and turns it off? Is a message sent when the phone is turned off? Thanks for the help.
