That plan is called "Developer Rate Plan", which is a data only plan. I am not sure if they still have it now but I am sure lots of sales representitives didn't hear of it.

As I search now, I can see it's mentioned here: http://idenphones.motorola.com/iden/dev ... te_app.jsp

Perhaps I'm answering my own question, but do I need to order a calling plan and Total Direct Connect with the initial purchase of the phone but can later request that the extra services of voice, SMS, Web... be removed from the account. Is that how you come up with only $9.99 per month or less? Again, Nexel won't provide without a calling program at minimum cost of $39.99.

It sounds like you can't order Nextel service without a calling plan? I understand the cost of the Total Direct Connect is $9.99 per month but the company does not want to sell me the phone and Total Direct Connect without a rate plan - $39.99 minimum. I talked to a local Nextel rep and the on-line sales and get the same answer. But when I read posts on the forum it seems to show a minimal charge of $9.99. What should I be asking Nextel for?
