Try a Sanyto Innuendo phone. LG Rumor's GPS reception seems weaker than other phones.

LG Rumor - Won't Acquire Signal After Being Dormant

We are launching a balloon to near space on Sunday, and using an LG Rumor phone with Accutracking to find the package when it returns to earth. We have been testing this phone relentlessly, since it is going to start on the ground, have a signal for a few minutes, then it will lose the GPS signal for3 hours as it rises to space, then as it falls, it needs to reacquire a GPS signal and send it via Accutracking.

We've been testing this via putting the phone into a metal container, thus blocking the signal for 3 hours (similar to being at 20,000-100,000' high). After taking it out after 3 hours, the phone will not acquire a signal and acts as if its been shut off (though it is still on).

Any ideas on how to make sure the phone wakes up after 3 hours of being out of signal range?
